NAS Training

On 27 & 28 September, three BAREG divers completed Nautical Archaeological Society (NAS) underwater archaeology in-water skills training – congratulations to Matt G., Brett S., and Kevin M.! Troy N., NAS tutor, provided the training and our thanks to him for running his fourth BAREG NAS class.

Training was conducted on a one hundred by thirty-foot wooden barge lying in 45 fsw at the mouth of the St. Mary’s River about two and a half nautical miles ESE of St. Georges Island, Maryland. This site is deeper than our previous training site and it offers better viz along with some current to clear disturbed sediment. The unidentified barge is a well-defined wreck (i.e., not a debris field) with major structural components that students can map and sketch.

The weather blew up more than forecasted on the first day and we appreciate Chris P. signing on as crew and conning M/V *My Purpose Holds* in bumpy seas as we deployed and recovered divers during the class. On the second day conditions were benign with bright sunshine and seas one foot. Water temperature was in the low 70s and it was a few degrees colder in the wake of the front that passed on the first day.

  • The Tango class (NATO designation) B-515 was built in 1976 and served in the Soviet and Russian navies' Northern Fleet until early in the 21st century. The hull design is directly descended from the Type XXI U-boats, such as the Wilhelm Bauer, that were being built in Germany in the early 1940s. Today the B-515 is a museum ship in Hamburg lying on the Elbe River's bed at low tide. It's unclear how the museum operator came up with the designation U-434 (painted on the conning tower) as this submarine never served in either the FRG's Bundesmarine or the DDR's Volksmarine.
